Projection Mapping vs. LED Walls
A decision guide comparing projection mapping and LED displays across daylight, surfaces, brightness, scenic integration, rigging, content, camera use, and budget.
By Jacob LillProjection and LED are different visual tools, not opposing quality levels. Projection can transform irregular architecture and scenic surfaces with minimal visible display structure. LED creates its own light, can deliver high brightness, and provides a defined modular canvas. The best choice follows the environment and experience.
Ambient light and brightness
LED usually holds contrast better in daylight and bright rooms. Projection is strongest when ambient light can be controlled and the surface supports reflected light. Lighting design must be coordinated with either choice.
Shape and scenic integration
Projection can wrap columns, facades, objects, and layered scenery, though occlusion and viewing angles require care. LED can be curved and built into scenic systems but remains a physical display with weight, structure, pixel pitch, and viewing-distance constraints.
Rigging, access, and footprint
Projection needs clear throw paths, stable projector positions, appropriate lenses, and protection from movement or weather. LED needs structural support, processing, power, data, service access, and often significant labor. Venue conditions can make either method impractical.
Content and cameras
Both systems need the correct pixel canvas and playback. LED moire, scan behavior, color, and brightness matter on camera. Projection brightness, surface color, shutter interaction, and exposure matter as well. Camera requirements should be tested, not assumed.
